Neal's Yard Dairy
London-based specialty monger that revived British farmhouse cheese. Aging cellars, deep producer relationships, traditional methods.
Founded in 1979 by Randolph Hodgson, Neal's Yard Dairy did for British farmhouse cheese what California wine did for American wine in roughly the same era — it gave a marginalized national category serious advocacy and proved it could compete with the best European production. NYD aged its own wheels at Bermondsey arches (and now at additional cellars), partnered directly with small British and Irish producers including Mary Holbrook, Mary Quicke, Joe Schneider (Stichelton), Jamie Montgomery, and Patrick Holden (Hafod Welsh cheddar). Influence of Patrick Rance (British cheese writer) shaped the early editorial direction. Today's NYD is widely considered the most editorially serious specialty cheese retailer in the world. Cellars open to visitors by appointment.
