Paxton & Whitfield
Oldest continuously-operating cheesemonger in Britain (1797). Royal Warrant holder; St James's establishment character.
Tracing its history to 1797, Paxton & Whitfield is the oldest continuously-operating cheesemonger in Britain and the holder of a Royal Warrant from Charles III. The Jermyn Street shop in St James's has operated from the same location since 1835. Editorial position is more traditional than Neal's Yard Dairy — emphasis on classic European and British selections, with somewhat less curation by individual producer. The Royal Warrant and St James's location create an establishment character that Neal's Yard deliberately doesn't have. Both shops serve different functions in the London specialty cheese landscape: Paxton & Whitfield as the institution, Neal's Yard as the editorial vanguard.
