Cowgirl Creamery
Both maker and seller. Mt Tam triple-cream, Red Hawk washed-rind, and the Point Reyes destination shop.
Founded in 1997 by Sue Conley and Peggy Smith — both formerly of Chez Panisse — Cowgirl Creamery built American-made bloomy and washed-rind cheeses to compete with European originals. The Point Reyes location (in West Marin County, an hour north of San Francisco) is both production facility and retail counter. Cowgirl operates a separate Cheese Library at the Point Reyes location stocking domestic and imported specialty cheeses. The two flagship cheeses — Mt Tam (organic triple-cream) and Red Hawk (washed-rind triple-cream) — are widely available beyond the West Coast. Acquired by Stonyfield's parent company Emmi in 2016; production has remained at Point Reyes.
