Marin County & Point Reyes (Northern California)
Northern California specialty cheese region. Cowgirl Creamery and Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese are the two foundational producers; both launched 1997.
Climate
Mediterranean coastal; cool foggy summers, mild wet winters. The Pacific influence on West Marin produces distinctive pasture and the coastal fog that defines the dairying.
Terroir
Point Reyes National Seashore boundary preserves dairy and ranching land that would otherwise have been developed for Bay Area expansion. The "G Ranch" through "Z Ranch" alphabetical naming reflects the historic dairy ranches still operating.
Historical context
Marin County dairying dates to the mid-19th century. Modern specialty production began with Cowgirl Creamery's founding in 1997 (Sue Conley and Peggy Smith). Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company (1997, Original Blue) launched concurrently. Both have become reference American specialty producers.
Modern status
Cowgirl Creamery (now Emmi-owned, production remains at Point Reyes) and Point Reyes Farmstead are the two major producers. The region also hosts important supporting infrastructure — Point Reyes Books, Hog Island Oyster Co., and the destination culinary scene that makes a Point Reyes visit a multi-stop expedition.
