Vermont Creamery
Vermont goat-cheese pioneer. Allison Hooper trained in France; founded the company that legitimized American goat cheese.
Founded in 1984 by Allison Hooper (returned from training at a French goat dairy) and Bob Reese, Vermont Creamery built American goat cheese into a viable category. The fresh chèvre was the original product; Bonne Bouche (ash-rinded aged chèvre) and Coupole (small bloomy-rind chèvre) followed and became reference American expressions of those French traditions. The company also produces cultured butter that's widely respected. Acquired by Land O'Lakes in 2017; Allison Hooper retired from operations the same year. Production has remained in Vermont; product quality has largely held despite the corporate ownership (unusual for that transition). The original fresh chèvre remains the volume product.
