Founder
Tom Vella (refounded 2002 by David Gremmels)

Originally founded in 1933 by Tom Vella as part of the Vella Cheese Company; reorganized in 2002 by David Gremmels and Cary Bryant as Rogue Creamery with a renewed focus on artisanal blue cheese. Rogue River Blue (wrapped in pear-brandy-soaked grape leaves, aged 9-11 months, produced only with autumn milk) won the World Cheese Awards Best in Show in 2019 — the first American cheese to win the global championship. The win is editorially significant: it marks the moment American specialty cheese reached parity with the best European production. Other notable cheeses include Rogue Smokey Blue, Crater Lake Blue, and Caveman Blue. Smaller operation than Jasper Hill or Cypress Grove; production constraints keep Rogue River Blue genuinely scarce.

Editorial note
Rogue River Blue is genuinely limited; sells out annually.
